When I was about 15 years old, my mother noticed that my back wasn’t straight. So it was off to the doctor! At that time, they didn’t know what caused scoliosis but they assumed it was due to the high fever I had. Now we know differently – scoliosis is caused by genetic variants that affect neurotransmitters in the brain. I had two choices back then – wear a Milwaukee Brace or have surgery and lay in a body cast for months. My parents chose the Milwaukee Brace. I had to wear it 23 hours a day! By evening, my back would hurt so much! I wore that brace for several years, but it didn’t really do anything to improve my scoliosis. When I was in my 60s, my scoliosis starting to affect the way I walked and was giving my quite a bit of back pain. I tried Schroth… but I didn’t have the specialized equipment at home and I never felt that it was helping me. So I researched scoliosis online and found the Scoliosis Warriors facebook page. I had never heard of the ScoliSMART Activity Suit (SAS) before this, so I asked a lot of questions to learn more. People on facebook said it reduced their curves and also reduced their pain. Wow, could it really do that?! I debated getting one. It was expensive…. But then my daughter said, “but wouldn’t it be worth the cost if it made you feel better?” That convinced me! I got my SAS from Dr. Dovorany in January , 2018, when I was 68 years old. Wow, what a difference it made! I no longer felt like I was leaning to the right when I walked! I no longer felt like I was limping! And my back pain went away shortly thereafter! I wear it a couple times a day for about 30 minutes at a time. It’s flexible and very comfortable to wear. I don’t know exactly the degree of my curve when I got my SAS, but I think it was about 60 degrees. Over the next few years, the SAS reduced my curve to 51 degrees! In 2021, I attended ScoliSMART Boot Camp in Pennsylvania with Dr. Clayton Stitzel. After just 3 days of the 5-day Boot Camp, my curve reduced again, down to 45 degrees! I continue to wear my SAS daily, I do the exercises at home that I learned at Boot Camp, and I also do the home rehabilitation with my Torso Trainer that I received at Boot Camp. All these things help keep my back muscles moving and working as intended. Scoliosis is a life-long condition, so I will continue doing these exercises as long as I am able. I’ll be 73 years old soon and am more active than most people 10 years younger than I am. And I owe it all to my SAS!
